Nagaon, Assam, Sept 3 : Villagers of Bagjan on Thursday spent five hours trying to rescue an elephant cub which had been trapped in marshy land near the Brahmaputra river and handed over the animal to the Wildlife officials, reports India TV reporter Bikash Sarma.
The cub was taken to the Kaziranga Wildlife sanctuary for treatment. The three-year-old cub had strayed away from its herd three days back and was first spotted inside the forest adjoining NRL Petrol Pump in Jakhlabandha.
The cub then strayed to Borkula and Rangalu villages, where villagers stoned him and the cub fled to the Brahmaputra river bank where it was trapped in mud.
Villagers of Bagjan first informed the Wildlife officials, but they refused to intervene saying they were not responsible for animal straying into civil area. After five hours of strenuous efforts, the cub was brought to the village, where people tried to treat his left leg and gave him food.
On the intervention of local journalists from Kaliabor, the officials of Kaziranga Wildlife sanctuary and came took away the cub for further treatment.
