Mumbai, Apr 24: Veteran playback singer Asha Bhosale today contributed Rs five lakh towards the Maharashtra Chief Minister's drought relief fund.
She met CM Prithviraj Chavan at his official bungalow “Varsha” in South Mumbai and handed over the cheque to him. The singer said it was the duty of each and every citizen to help the government in providing relief to those facing acute water scarcity and drought.
She had recently announced that the cash prize of Rs one lakh given to her by Hridayesh Arts with the Hridaynath Mangeshkar Award, would be donated to the drought relief fund.
The singer added Rs four lakh to the prize money and handed over Rs five lakh to the Chief Minister. Chavan said funds were pouring in from all sections of the society towards drought relief measures which shows that people are alert to the needs of the deprived.
So far, Rs 116 crore has been collected for the drought relief fund. Siddhivinayak temple trust in Mumbai and Saibaba Sansthan, Shirdi have contributed Rs 25 crore each.
