Jaipur: Spiritual guru Asaram Bapu, arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl, Friday moved Rajasthan High Court's Jodhpur bench for bail, a lawyer said.
The 72-year-old Asaram is currently lodged in the Jodhpur Central Jail after the district and sessions judge (rural) remanded him to 14 days' judicial custody in the sexual assault case. The custody ends Sept 16.
The lower court had Sep 4 rejected Asaram's bail application.
"We have filed a bail application in the Rajasthan High Court today (Friday) seeking bail for him in the case," said Pradeep Chaudhary, one of the spiritual guru's advocates in Jodhpur.
The application is likely to come up for hearing Monday, Chaudhary added.
Asaram, who was arrested from his ashram in Madhya Pradesh's Indore, sought bail claiming that police erred in booking him under rape charges, which is non-bailable.
The girl alleged that the sexual assault took place Aug 15 at Asaram's ashram outside Jodhpur. The spiritual guru has denied the charge.
