Kolkata: Archbishop of Kolkata Thomas D'Souza today demanded an apology from RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, alleging that he was getting “tacit support” from the government on his controversial remarks on Mother Teresa.
“He should apologise, but he believes, I suppose, that there is support from the government itself, at least tacitly, because of all those who came out to support him. That's what I have heard from the media,” D'Souza told PTI.
He said if conversion was the motive of all humanitarian work that Christian missionaries do, then all people at schools, colleges, hospitals and health centres run by them would have been Christians by now.
“In fact our percentage in the country is going down. Why is he (Bhagwat) full of hatred for such a small minority that we are?” the Archbishop wondered.
He said despite all the allegations being hurled, they and the Missionaries of Charity would not stop doing good work for the poor.
Two days ago, Bhagwat had gone on record saying that conversion to Christianity was the main objective behind Mother Teresa's service to the poor.
“Mother was very true to her faith, a Catholic, and she always acknowledged that.
She received inspiration from the Gospel of the Jesus that whatsoever you do to my brothers and sisters you do it to me.
So in every person she saw God and served them. And therefore to say that the motive was to convert people is absolutely wrong,” the Archbishop said.
