Andhra Pradesh: A Blaze erupted at Sri Damodaram Sanjeevaiah Thermal Power Plant in Nelatur on Tuesday. According to reports, three fire tenders rushed to the spot to douse the flame. Following the incident, Power generation at the Thermal Power Station's 800 MW Unit - 2 at Krishnapatnam was disrupted. Police informed that some pieces of coal fell off the conveyor belt and caught fire at around 9:40 am.
"The dropped pieces of coal led to sparks and fire but there were no casualties or injuries," a Krishnapatnam Port police official told PTI.
He further said that firefighters from Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Company (AP GENCO) and Krishnapatnam jointly doused the flames within half an hour.
Kanta Rao, chief engineer from the power plant further said that following the incident, coal feeding to one of its three units (Unit-2) has been ceased. Moreover, the power supply will be disrupted for the next three days.
As of now, the officials are estimating the extent of the damage. Efforts are underway to restore Unit-2 within two days.
Though power generation will be affected due to one unit going out of operation, Rao said there was no cause for worry as peak summer power consumption has lapsed. Other power stations will ramp up generation to cover the shortfall, he said.
With three 800 MW units, Sri Damodaram Sanjeevaiah Thermal Power Station has a power generation capacity of 2,400 MW.
