Amul Dairy plant in Thane opened to meet rising milk demand

Mumbai : Gujarat-based Amul Dairy yesterday inaugurated a milk processing unit with a capacity of one million litres per day in Thane district, to meet the rising demand of fresh milk and dairy products here.

Under the dairy plan, about Rs 3,000 crore has already been invested and further Rs 17,000 crore would be invested in the next 10 years, he noted.


Sharing about the new dairy facility, Amul Dairy Director Rahul Kumar said: “We have already invested Rs 180 crore in the said plant. It has an installed capacity to process one million litres of milk per day with a provision to expand upto to two million litres in the near future.” The plant also has 50,000 litres per hour integrated milk reception, processing and on-line pasteurisation, standardisation and homogenisation facility, which is first of its kind in India, he said.

Besides, the new plant has ice cream making facility with a capacity of 2 lakh litres per day, he added.

Kumar further said that it will source milk through a cooperative model from near by villages. At present, four village level cooperative societies have been made operational with a membership of 500 farmers associated with Amul Dairy.
