New Delhi: Born in1994 at Mirapur village of West Bengal, Ajifa Khatun was a healthy baby and it wasn't long before she started to walk and talk but her growth stalled before her 2nd birthday. She weighs just 7.700 kg , and still needs to be spoon-fed and carried everywhere by her mother Apila.Although she is 19 years old but physically and cognitively she is similar to a two-year-old, and has an IQ of less than 20. She don't attend any school instead passes the time playing with local children, only able to take a few baby steps without help.Ajifa has three siblings, two younger sisters and a brother.Initially when Ajifa's parents contacted doctors to know the cause of his stalled growth doctors told them that Ajifa would start growing again as they were not able to know about the hormonal disorder Ajifa was suffering from.Scientists believe that Ajifa could have Laron Syndrome, a rare genetic condition, which is believed to have affected just 300 people across the globe.People living with Laron lack a hormone called Insulin-like Growth Factor 1, or IGF-1, which stimulates the cell to grow and divide to form new cells.Researchers claim that Ajifa is likely to maintain her childlike features for the majority of her life. The sun spoke with Ajifa's father, during the interview Ajifa's father said my beautiful daughter is always smiling and brings joy to her family.‘She doesn't communicate much but she knows what's going on around her,' he said.
