Allahabad: The Allahabad High Court has removed restriction on undergraduate girls from using the Maulana Azad Library, central library of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

The court yesterday also sought a reply from Vice Chancellor Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah who had recently turned down the demand of students of Women's College to access the library saying there would be four times more boys in the library if girls were allowed in.

The court took up the matter after a PIL on Thursday filed seeking a direction to the AMU to allow entry of female students into the library.

The PIL was filed by law intern and activist Deeksha Dwivedi. The PIL alleged that Shah was adopting a ‘discriminatory' attitude towards girl students.

On Thursday, the AMU had informed the HRD Ministry that a request by undergraduate girls of the Women's College for access to the central library was under consideration.

The library is located within the university and is 3 km from the Women's College.
