Aligarh, UP: A major Bhopal-type gas leak was averted in Aligarh city on Saturday, after technical experts managed to remove 23 cylinders filled with chlorine gas from a truck loaded with chemicals that had met an accident.
The mishap took place on Friday night when the chemicals-laden truck met an accident on Ramghat Road and caught fire. Two persons were charred to death.
Local police noticed that the truck carried 23 cylinders filled with chlorine gas.
The problem was how to remove these cylinders safely without causing any leak. Many families left their homes after they complained of breathlessness and watering of eyes.
Each cylinder carried 900 kg of chlorine gas. At around 11 pm on Saturday, police stopped traffic on the highway and brought in a technical team, which managed to shift the gas cylinders to another truck and moved out of city limits.
