Rathi demanded a concrete assurance from Maharashtra Home Minister about nabbing the real culprit, who is still at large.
Nirmala Samant Prabhavalkar, member of state women's commission, who came to Mumbai hospital to meet Preeti's relatives, described the acid throwing incident as a failure of the state government and railway police. "I don't understand why the culprit has not been arrested till now", she said, adding that the matter be handed over to CBI.
Prabhvalkar also demanded a ban on illegal sale of acid in the market.
Social activist Alok Dikshit, founder of Stop Acid Attack campaign, said there has been 56 acid attacks in the last three months. He promised to meet Home Minister R R Patil on Sunday alongwith Preeti's father.
Preeti's body has been kept at J J Hospital for post-mortem. Her father said, he would take her body to Delhi for cremation after meeting R R Patil.
Preeti Rathi, 23, had been battling for her life at Bombay Hospital for the last one month after a man threw acid on her. She succumbed n Saturday.
Preeti (23) was on ventilator support for two weeks as her right lung had suffered severe damage, hospital authorities said. She had also developed complications in the upper respiratory system.
Preeti arrived in the city on May 2, accompanied by her father and relatives to join the Colaba Naval Hospital `INS Ashwini' as a staff nurse. As she got off Garib Rath Express at Bandra terminus, an unidentified man threw acid at her and ran away.
Doctors tried their best to heal the burn injuries but the wounds continued to bleed and her kidneys also developed complications, hospital sources said.
The doctors were also contemplating grafting of artificial skin but she succumbed on saturday.
