Itanagar, Aug 19: The powerful All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union today alleged that the national media was following ‘double standards' in making Anna Hazare ‘a national hero', while ignoring the indefinite fast since 2000 by Manipuri social activist Irom Sharmila.

“The national media has made Anna Hazare a national hero. No doubt, he deserves appreciation from all as he is fighting for a great cause. But what about our own Irom Sharmila, the Manipuri woman, who is on fast since last 10 years. She too is fighting for the people of North East,” AAPSU president Takam Tatung, said.

Stating that her fight against the draconian Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) was continuing for years together, but was not highlighted by the national media, he said “Why are they shying away from highlighting her agitation?

“Is her agitation less significant than that of Anna Hazare?” Tatung questioned in a communique.

He, however, urged every Arunachalee to support Hazare. “The much awaited Lokpal bill will come in handy for a state like ours where corruption is rampant. Everyone of us should come out and support Anna,” Tatung said. PTI
