New Delhi, Jul 20: In a crackdown on late night errant bikers in New Delhi area, Delhi Police today impounded 14 vehicles and challaned 99 others for offences related to triple-loading and driving without helmet.
The drive that began at 11 pm in the heart of the city last night continued till 5 am today during which 787 vehicles, primarily two-wheelers, were checked.
Though there was no specific tip-off, the drive also aimed at discouraging youths from performing risky motorcycle stunts, a menace in many parts of the city during the night, police said.
“The purpose of the drive is also to stop youngsters from performing dangerous motorcycle stunts as they are life threatening to others,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) S B S Tyagi said.
However, no case of drunken driving was found during the surprise-check spread across areas that included busy transit points like Connaught Place, India Gate, Barakhamba Road, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Rafi Marg.
“The aim of the drive was to ensure safety of the citizens travelling at night. We have impounded 14 vehicles and challaned 99 others for not having registration papers, licence, for triple-loading and driving without helmet. However, not a single case of drunken driving was found,” Tyagi said.
The drive was carried out by seven police stations including Tilak Marg, Connaught Place, Barakhamba, Parliament Street, Chanakyapuri, Mandir Marg and Tuglaq road.
Policemen were deployed at various turns in 43 pickets during the drive that also witnessed the participation of traffic police.
