New Delhi: 4,685 defence personnel have laid down their lives since the 1999 Kargil conflict, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said today.
Compensation has been paid to the next of kin of 4,659 deceased personnel.
Out of the remaining 26 cases, 22 are recent occurrences and in four cases, payment has not been made due to court cases, Parrikar said in a written reply to Lok Sabha.
In another reply, he said Army has a shortage of 9,642 officers as of January 1 this year besides 26,675 in other ranks.
The Navy has a shortfall of 1,322 officers and 11,257 sailors.
Air Force has a shortage of 152 officers and 2,961 airmen.
