Almost after 19 months, on 18 January 1977, Indira called fresh elections in March and released all political prisoners. The Emergency officially ended on 23 March 1977.
This came after an intelligence report predicted majority for Indira and this was the only reason that prompted her go for polls.
The Janata Party won more than 345 seats with Congress decimated to 189 seats in 545 members House.
