Malda, July 31:  More than 40 persons were injured when the engine and six coaches of Guwahati-Bangalore Express derailed  and the Azeemganj passenger train coming from the opposite side collided with the wreckage of the express train  on Sunday evening, officials said.

The mishap took place at around 7:15 pm  near Jamirghata railway station, nearly 35 km from Malda.

Two coaches were badly crushed. The coaches alongwith the engine fell in muddy water and slush.

Continuous rain and darkness were hampering rescue  work at the site of collision.

This collision took place on a Sunday. The Kalka Mail collision on July 10 this year  near Fatehpur, UP, also took place on a Sunday.
