New Delhi: An average of 370 people commit suicide every day in the country while over four lakh people have taken their lives in the last three years.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau, 4,05,629 people have committed suicide across the country from 2011 to 2013, Minister of State for Home RPN Singh told the Lok Sabha in a written reply to a query.
Singh said altogether 1,35,445 people have committed suicide in 2012, 1,35,585 in 2011 and a total of 1,34,599 people took their lives in 2010.
The highest number of people have committed suicide in Tamil Nadu -- 49,451 people in three years, followed by Maharashtra --47,975 people, West Bengal --47,486 people and Andhra Pradesh --45,216 people.
