Indore, Sept 30: More than 30 lakh eligible women voters have been left out of the voters' list, suggests a recent directive by Madhya Pradesh state Election Commission to all districts, reports the newspaper DNA. In Indore sex ratio is 924 women per 1,000 men. but the voters' list says it is 892:1000
The state Election Commission has arrived at the findings after calculating the female ratio of voters and comparing it with sex ratio as per the Census 2011. The Census says that that there are 930 women for 1,000 men.
The state Election Commission found that in the voters' list, the sex ratio is 883 female voters against 1,000 male voters.
In Indore, the general sex ratio is 924 women against 1,000 men. The voters list has a sex ratio of 892 women against 1000 men voters.
Paradoxically, these are the conditions despite the fact that the state boasts of having the maximum percentage of women members of Parliament, compared to other states of the country.
"As per the Census 2011, there are a total of around 50 lakh eligible individuals who are out of voters' list and out of these more than 30 lakh are women," Jaideep Govind, chief electoral officer of the state, told DNA.
The Commission has written to all district administrations of the state and asked them to include these un-enfranchised women in the voters' list.
Women rights activists attributed this to lack of awareness and education.
"The condition of women could be well gauged from this fact. Women should be made aware of their rights," said women rights activist Rinchin.
The new voters' list is being prepared in the state wherein the process of rectifying the ommissions is going on. The inclusion of new names in the list will start from October 10.
