A day after they were arrested on charges of ragging, 18 students of a medical college in Mumbai were on Monday expelled from the hostel.

"We have expelled the 18 students (accused of ragging) from the college hostel. But they will continue their studies," Sanjay Oak, Dean of Seth G S medical college and KEM hospital at Parel, told PTI.

"The step was taken after a meeting with civic body officials...We have also reported to police about this decision," he added.

Earlier today, the students were produced before Bhoiwada metropolitan magistrate which released them on bail on a bond of Rs 5,000 each.

The students, undergoing occupational and physiotherapy courses in the college, were arrested yesterday for allegedly ragging 10 first year students on New Year eve.

The students, in the age group of 18 to 25 years, have been booked under various sections of the IPC and the Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act.

They were arrested following an FIR lodged by the hospital after the anti-ragging committee of the college conducted a probe into the allegation.

Dean of the medical college Oak said the students who were expelled from hostel will not be eligible for any fellowships or freeships which they are entitled to.

They won't be allowed to represent the college in any public forum, including sports, he added. PTI
