Chennai: Management programmes seem to be losing sheen as the recent figures released by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) showed that 147 standalone B-schools and MBA programmes offered by engineering institutions across the country closed down in the last academic year.

The report further states that the number of postgraduate diploma courses has also fallen from 606 to 600.

In Maharashtra 24 MBA colleges closed while in Tamil Nadu 23 colleges have shut down in the past one year. Andhra Pradesh followed the two with closure of 19 colleges.

On the other hand, Bihar, Jharkhand and Kerala have shown a slight growth by adding one new institution each.

Educational consultant Moorthy Selvakumaran told Times of India, “Most institutions closed down mainly because of lack of patronage.”

He stated that the decline started a couple of years ago with a dip in the number of enrollments for Common Admission Test (CAT), scores of which determine admission to the premier Indian Institutes of Managements and other management programmes across the country.
