Ratlam (MP), Jan 14: Twelve people were killed when a stampede broke out in Hussain Tekri near Jaora town in the district on the occasion of Chellum, a Muslim religious observation that comes after Moharram.
The stamped broke out when a huge crowd gathered at Hussain Tekri's main entry to take part in Chehllum were pushed backward by the police to regulate their entry after midnight.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed grief at the tragic incident at Hussein Tekri in Ratlam district.
He today directed State Home Minister, Uma Shankar Gupta and Forest Minister Sartaj Singh, who is also the in-charge Minister of Ratlam to visit the spot and take necessary action.
Chouhan also asked them to ensure that the injured be provided free of cost treatment.
Meanwhile, State Congress President, Kantilal Bhuria demanded action against those responsible for the tragedy and demanded Rs 5 lakh compensation each to the kin of the deceased.
The state government has announced Rs one lakh ex-gratia payment for the kin of those killed in the stampede.
A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
