Rajkot: A bizarre incident came into light on Monday when an elderly couple died after the woman slipped from the staircase and fell on her husband Ramdhan Society on the upscale Kalavad Road in Rajkot.
According to a report in The Times of India, Manjula Vithlani, a 68-year-old woman who weighed 128 kg, hurriedly took the staircase after her son Ashish, who lived on the first floor of the house, complained of breathing problem.
In haste, the woman slipped from the staircase and fell on her husband Natvarlal, who was following her upstairs. He got crushed under his wife’s weight and suffered serious head injuries.
The elderly couple lived on the ground floor, whereas Ashish along with his wife Nisha lived on the first floor of the bungalow.
“At around 4am, Nisha came downstairs to get some medicine for Ashish. Her in-laws also woke up and hurriedly tried to go upstairs to check his health. However, Manjula could not keep her balance and slipped. She fell on Natvarlal who was climbing behind her. They were rushed to a private hospital where both died of cerebral haemorrhage,” police officials told The Times of India.
Hearing the noise on the staircase, Nisha tried to reach out to them but unfortunately slipped on the floor and suffered minor injuries on her leg.
“The couple always remained anxious about their son's health. On getting to know that he had taken ill, they tried to reach the first floor in too much hurry,” said Pradhyuman Ravaiya, investigating officer of Rajkot taluka police station.
