In a significant development that has stirred a fresh political controversy, the Yogi Adityanath government of Uttar Pradesh has decided to impose additional cess on wine and beer in the state.
The government will use the fund generated by the additional cess for the welfare of cows.
According to the government decision, an extra amount of Rs 165 crore will be spent for the welfare of the cows.
An additional cess of Rs 1-3 will be imposed on refilling of beer bottles. Similarly, a cess of Rs 0.5-2 will be applicale on beer manufactured in Uttar Pradesh.
In hotels and bars, an additional cess of Rs 10 will be imposed on foreign-made liquor while an additional cess of Rs 5 will be applicable on beer.
The government’s move has been criticised by the oppositional parties in the state.
