Woman's body removed from funeral pyre to probe cause of death

The body of a 50-year-old woman was pulled out from the funeral pyre by the police at a village in Uttar Pradesh after they suspected foul play behind her death. The husband of the deceased and four others were booked in the case. The incident was reported from Godhna village in Muzaffarnagar district Wednesday evening, police said.

According to Station House Officer Amardeep Lal, the police reached the spot after receiving information from a villager.

The body of the woman was then pulled out from the funeral pyre that had already been lit allegedly by the woman's in-laws, he said.

A complaint in the matter was lodged by the woman’s brother, who alleged the in-laws of the woman killed her and were secretly trying to cremate the body in order to destroy evidence, Lal said.

The complainant alleged that the in-laws used to harass the woman and she was killed over domestic dispute.

A case has been registered and efforts are on to nab the accused, the SHO said.

The woman’s husband identified as Vijaypal was booked along with five other people, he said, adding all the accused have gone absconding.

Meanwhile, the body was sent for an autopsy, Lal said.
