Varanasi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set launch 'Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana' in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district today.The Union Cabinet on Economical Affairs sanctioned a scheme on 10th March 2016 to provide free LPG connections to the poor women of the nation.
The ambitious scheme will be a tool to empower women and protect their health . Besides it will also reduce drudgery and the time spent on cooking.
1) PMUY is Rs. 8,000 crore scheme to provide 5 crore free cooking gas connections to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families over next three years.
2) The scheme provides a financial support of Rs 1,600 for each LPG connection to the BPL households.
3) The identification of eligible BPL families will be made in consultation with the state governments and the Union Territories.
4) Simultaneously, it also aims to provide cooking gas connections to 5 crore women beneficiaries from BPL families over the next three years.
5) The scheme essentially will use the money saved from 1.13 crore cooking gas users voluntarily gave up their subsidies through PM’s ‘Give It Up’ initiative.
6) Nearly Rs 5,000 crore of subsidy saved through the campaign is being used to provide LPG connection to the poor.
