As the nation celebrates the 114th birth anniversary of India’s second Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on October 2, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday visited the Vijay Ghat to pay floral tributes to the former prime minister.
PM Modi also visited the Raj Ghat early on Tuesday and paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary.
"Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji epitomised strength and simplicity. He led India at a crucial time and worked hard to make our nation more prosperous. Today, on his Jayanti I paid tributes to Shastri Ji at Vijay Ghat," tweeted Narendra Modi.
Modi will visit a mini digital exhibition at the event, accompanied by the Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres.
Later in the day, the Prime Minister inaugurated the first Assembly of the International Solar Alliance.
Former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, who understood the significance of farmers and soldiers, shares his birth anniversary with the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi.
Drawing inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi, Shastri coined the term ‘jai jawan jai kisan’. He plunged into the freedom struggle while he was in his teens.
Shastri had died in Tashkent, hours after signing a declaration with Pakistan President Muhammad Ayub Khan post-1965 Indo-Pak war during talks moderated by Soviet Premier Alexei Keynoting.
