In a one of a kind incident, three men travelling to Dubai were held at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Wednesday for allegedly smuggling out 3.5 lakh euros (over Rs 2.6 crore) concealed it in their headgear and their rectums.
Officials said the incident was reported from the Terminal-III area of the airport in the wee hours when the three reached the airport to take their flight.
"The passengers were intercepted after their activities were found suspicious. They were found concealing Euro 3,50,000 in their headgear and rectum," the officials said.
“During their search, some currency notes were recovered from their turbans. But most of the money was found inserted in their rectum, neatly wrapped in plastic,” Times of India quoted a senior police official as saying.
The three were intercepted by DRI officers as they headed towards the check-in counter to get their boarding passes, after entering the departure terminal of T3. They were immediately offloaded and handed over to customs authorities for further probe.
“The three passengers were offloaded by the airline. More investigations are on and the trio's background is being checked. We are also looking at records to see if they were involved in smuggling in the past,” said an official.
