Kupwara Army camp attack: Civilian killed in firing after stone pelting near encounter site

Terrorists on Thursday morning attacked an Army camp in Panzgam area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

A civilian was killed in firing after a mob started pelting stones near the Indian Army camp in Kupwara in north Kashmir where an army captain and two soldiers also lost their lives while another five soldiers were injured when militants carried out a Fidayeen attack.

The army officer killed was identified as Captain Ayush Yadav. He was 25 years old and had been in service for three years.

The other two martyrs have been identified as 45-year-old JCO Bhoop Singh Gujjar Dusaa who had been service for 26 years, and Naik Venkat Raman who had been in service for 18 years. 

Soon after the encounter, a huge mob gathered near the Army camp and pelted stones on the security forces' passing convoy. A 70-year-old civilian was killed and three others received injuries firing incident outside the Army camp.

The terror attack took place at Panjgaon at Chowkibal when militants, suspected to be of terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad stormed the battalion camp which is in-charge of road opening duties on the crucial roads in this area. 

Two militants were killed as army foiled their attack, the sources said. However, a hunt is on to ascertain if any militant sneaked into the camp under the cover of darkness.

"Fidayeen terrorists attacked the Panzgam army camp close to the Line of Control (LoC) around 4.30 a.m." Defence Ministry Spokesman, Colonel Rajesh Kalia told IANS. 

"The three soldiers killed, included a captain and a non-commissioned officer (NGO)," the spokesman added.

The five injured in the attack in Jammu and Kashmir have been airlifted to Srinagar for treatment, defence sources said.

According to Defence Ministry sources, the terrorists sneaked into the Army camp after the cutting the fencing. 

They also said that Defence Minister Arun Jaitley has been briefed about the attack. 

Meanwhile, the Northern Command of Army has alerted all the Army camps including main area camps of Kupwara, Machil, Tangmarg, Keran, Uri, Baramulla, Rampur, Poonch and Rajouri.

As per sources, it was a well-planned attack and it is possible that the fidayeens might have done proper attack before executing the attack.  

The attack comes a day after it was reported that around 150 militants are waiting near the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) to sneak into the Valley.

Lt Gen J S Sandhu, Commander of Srinagar-based 15 Corps which is responsible for security of the Kashmir valley, said there would be more militants at the launching pads in PoK in the areas facing Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu province.

A 70-year-old civilian was killed and three others received injuries in a firing incident on Thursday outside the Army camp in Kupwara district, which was attacked by militants on Thursday morning.

The state police said a mob gathered outside the Army camp in Panzgam village of Kupwara district where five persons -- three army soldiers and two militants, and resorted to stone pelting.

"A 70-year-old civilian has died in the firing outside the Panzgam Army camp, while three other civilians are injured," a police official said.

"A mob had gathered outside the camp after the encounter ended there in the morning. They resorted to heavy stone pelting at the camp, demanding the bodies of slain militants," the police official added.

The Army has not so far confirmed whether the security guards at the camp opened fire at the mob.
