Five people were arrested today in connection with the assault on four Nigerian students yesterday, Noida police said, according to ANI.
"Police have arrested 5 persons. FIR registered, action will be taken accordingly,"said Daljeet Chaudhary, assistant director general (law and order), to ANI.
Following the attacks on African students, including a female student, by a mob in Greater Noida on Sunday night, the Nigerian Ambassador, along with a delegation today visited the victims admitted in Noida's Kailash Hospital.
The Ambassador said that he has spoken to the students from Africa, who have told him they were feeling unsafe here.
African students will meet the Greater Noida police and senior government officials this afternoon.
The injured students said that they were unaware of what had prompted the attack.
"We don't know why we were assaulted, the mob hit us with rods, bricks and knives. We asked people around for help, but not one called the police. Even our college did not help," they told ANI.
Earlier today, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj spoke with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath about the attack on several African students, including a Nigerain girl, in Greater Noida.
She said UP CM Adityanath has assured of a fair and impartial investigation into the incident.
Swaraj said she has sought information from the Uttar Pradesh government over the arrest of some African students for their alleged role in the death of a class 12 student in Greater Noida, near Delhi.
The incident happened when a protest march by locals over the death of the class 12 student turned violent. Several Nigerians were reportedly beaten up by the mob.
"I have asked for a report from Government of Uttar Pradesh about the reported attack on African students in Noida," Ms Swaraj said in a tweet.
Locals blamed Africans for drugging Manish Khari. The 17-year-old student, who died of a cardiac arrest on Saturday, had reportedly overdosed on drugs.
2 Nigerians were among others who were out shopping when the mob attacked them, after a peaceful protest turned violent. Police had to resort to baton charge to bring the situation under control. Three Nigerians have been admitted in a hospital in Greater Noida.
According to reports, five Nigerian students have been picked up by the police for their alleged role in the death of the student. An investigation is currently under way to find out about the reported use of drugs.
The attack on Africans in Greater Noida is not an isolated case. There have been several incidents of Africans being targeted in Delhi over the last few years.
