Supreme Court collegium recommends two High Court judges for elevation

The Supreme Court collegium has recommended the elevation of Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice Sanjiv Sanjiv Khanna of the Delhi High Court to the apex court.

The Supreme Court collegium has recommended the elevation of Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice Sanjiv Sanjiv Khanna of the Delhi High Court to the apex court.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the collegium chaired by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi on Jan 10, which reconsidered the recommendations made by the previous collegium on December 12 last.

Out of the 31 sanctioned strength of judges, the Supreme Court had vacancies for 5 seats. Ouf of this, two have been recommended to be filled.

At its January 12 meeting, the collegium discussed the names of Chief Justices as well as senior puisne Judges of all High Courts, eligible for elevation to the Supreme Court. 

"The Collegium is of the considered view that at present the following persons are more deserving and suitable in all respects than other Chief Justices and senior puisne Judges of High Courts, for being appointed as Judges of the4 Supreme Court," it said while deciding on the names of Justice Maheshwari and Justice Khanna.

Apart from Chief JusticeGogoi, the ohers in the Collegium are Justice A.K. Sikri, Justice S.A. Bobde, Justice N.V. Ramana and Justice Arun Mishra.
