Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and apprised him about the flood situation in the state.

Addressing media, Kumar said lakhs of people are being evacuated and we are still evaluating the scale of damage in the state.

Kumar also raised the issue of silt accumulation at Farakka barrage which has swollen the Ganga river all across the state.

He said silt deposited in the Ganga in Bihar due to the barrage is something the central government should take care of to save the state from devastating floods every year.

Kumar also said that PM has assured that the centre will send a team of experts to assess the situation in state including that of the farraka barrage.

The Bihar CM also warned that if the problem at Farakka would not be resolved it will also hamper centre's 'Namami Gange' project.

Kumar has earlier demanded formulation of a national silt management policy to protect the state from devastating floods.

Meanwhile, the Centre has rushed 10 NDRF teams to flood-hit areas of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in order to launch massive relief and rescue operations to help those affected in these states.

NDRF Director General OP Singh told PTI that while five teams are being airlifted for immediate deployment from its base in Odisha to Uttar Pradesh, the rest five are being picked by choppers from Bathinda in Punjab and will be sent to Bihar.

In Bihar yesterday, NDRF teams evacuated 3,400 people from Didarganj, 580 from Bakhtiyarpur, 545 from Danapur, 380 from Chhapra, 355 from Vaishali and 15 from Maner in Patna.
