In a shameful display of insensibility, one of Yogi Adityanath government’s ministers paid a paltry sum of Rs 4,000 as compensation to a peasant whose farm was run over by his cavalcade.
Jail minister Jai Kumar Singh Jaiki’s cavalcade, comprising more than 35 vehicles, was in Orai for the ‘bhumi puja’ of a gaushala (cow shelter).
His cavalcade ran over Devendra Kumar Dohrey’s farm, ruining all the seeds he had sown a week back.
The minister said that compensation of Rs 4,000 was paid to the farmer. However, Dohrey said that half of his three-acre farming was ruined, and the compensation was nothing compared to what he had spent.
Dohrey said he ran after the cavalcade till the venue but was stopped from entering the venue. Later, when the minister began to leave, Dohrey threw himself before his vehicle.
Jaiki first avoided the farmer’s request. However, when the media reached spot, the minister immediately gave him a compensation of Rs 4,000, and left the spot.
Dohrey pleaded to the minister that he has to pay Rs 200 per hour to water his fields, adding that he had taken loan for farming. He said that what he got as compensation was nothing compared to the loss he suffered.
Like Jaiki, farmers in the Bundelkhand region have been struggling because of the scanty rainfall this season.
