Shaktikanta Das was appointed as new Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor on Tuesday. The announcement came a day after Urjit Patel announced his resignation on Monday from the central bank.
Das is a retired 1980 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Tamil Nadu cadre.

Earlier, he was a member of the Fifteenth Finance Commission of India. During his career as a bureaucrat, he served in various capacities for Indian and Tamil Nadu governments.
Das retired as Economic Affairs Secretary in May 2017. He has been appointed for a term of three years.
