Results of the class 12 final examinations of the Jammu and Kashmir State Board of School Education (JKBOSE) were declared on Sunday, registering a 75 per cent pass percentage.
Of the 28,800 boys, 21,586 passed the examinations, securing a pass percentage of 74.95 per cent, while of the total 24,359 girls, 18,533 passed the examinations with a pass percentage of 76.08 per cent.
Shahreena (18), who hails from Tral town in Pulwama, the hometown of killed Hizbul terrorist Burhan Wani, topped the exams, securing 498 marks out of 500.
Interestingly, Shahreena comes from the same school where Wani was enrolled before joining militancy.
Shahreena’s achievement is remarkable because this year, schools across the Valley were closed for nearly five months due to violence in the wake of Wani’s killing.
"I had made up my mind that I have to study. I didn't allow myself to get distracted. These are situations I have grown up in. I only continued my studies," the topper said.
She has always been a bright student. In 2014, she stood second in Kashmir's Class 10 board exams.
"Only we know the circumstances she continued her studies in. It was not easy but she didn't lose focus," her mother, Tasleema, said.
Tral is known for its separatist sympathies. Security forces have killed dozens of terrorists in the region. Last year, Wani's death had triggered unrest in Kashmir that forced schools to close their doors.
