New Delhi: The Supreme Court today gave green signal to NEET (National Eligibility Entrance Test), paving way for common entrance test for admission to medical colleges across the country.
The SC also cleared the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) proposal to hold NEET in two phases -- first on May 1 and then on July 24 this year. The result will be declared on August 17, followed by counselling and admissions.
The court was hearing a PIL filed by NGO Sankalp Charitable Trust, which has contended that as authorities were not conducting the NEET for the students across the country aspiring to join medical colleges, the private medical colleges were holding their own exams to admit the students.
The decision to hold NEET was earlier opposed by states like Tamil Nadu, Association of Karnataka Medical Colleges besides minority institutions like CMC Vellore. They had objected to NEET saying it is illegal and unconstitutional.
