Barmer: A man who slept with 55 brides before fleeing with their jewellery, died alone at the age of 54 in western Rajasthan’s Barmer district.

According to a report in Hindustan Times, Jiyaram Jat, nick named Jamai Raja by the police, had as many as 18 cases against him in various police stations of Barmer.

He died on Saturday in Nimbalkot village of Sindhari, close to the international border in Barmer district and was cremated by local police.

According to the police, Jiyaram Jat was arrested in 2004 in a molestation case, and till that time he had looted 55 brides.

During the interrogation, Jat said that he only targeted small houses occupied by a single family, in which the girl was married in her childhood and was ready for her ‘gauna’.

‘Gauna’ is a practice prevalent in many rural areas throughout the country in which a female child bride is sent to her husband once she has become an adult.

Jat used to strike only when women were alone in the house and used to introduce himself as the groom.

“He would walk into such households after nightfall and introduce himself as the girl’s husband. Since she was married in childhood, she wouldn’t recognise him,” Sindhari station house officer Ramniwas Bishnoi told Hindustan Times.

He would then copulate with the bride and flee with the jewellery to be sent with the girl before daybreak.

Jiyaram Jat was caught by the police in 2013 when he was back in the area for his 56th victim.
