Politics over Iftar party has started as Union Minister of Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that Congress president Rahul Gandhi was organising it for “political gain”.
“Rahul Gandhi is organising Iftar party for political gain. However, I am doing so for the needy. We are not competing with them in any way,” Naqvi said on Wednesday, reported ANI.
After a gap of two years, Congress party will host an Iftar party here on Wednesday. It will begin in the evening. The party's last Iftar was hosted by then Congress President Sonia Gandhi in 2015.
Grand old party’s Iftar is coming at a time when the opposition is aiming for an anti-BJP alliance ahead of the 2019 General Elections. It is expected to see a host of leaders from all opposition parties and of all faiths. There will also be an Iftar in Lalu Prasad Yadav's house.
The Congress move comes a few days after the Rashtrapati Bhavan decided not to host an Iftar this year. President Ram Nath Kovind stated that there should be no religious observance at taxpayer's expense at the public building.
However, Naqvi announced that he will host Iftar party for divorced women and their families on Wednesday.
General Elections are due to be held in April or May 2019 to constitute the seventeenth Lok Sabha. And Congress is planning to give a tough fight to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
