Against the backdrop of Rs 11,400 crore PNB scam, Union Minister Piyush Goyal today said people will ask how the loans were given during the previous Congress-led UPA regime during 2004-14.

Goyal, who holds railways and coal ministries, said this while replying to a question regarding alleged swindling of bank money by billionaire Nirav Modi and his associates.

"Things are now coming out. Only this government had the courage to tell the country the wrongdoing of past and kind of people who were given bank loans," Goyal said.

He further said the NDA government has started the cleaning process and now things are coming to light.

"The people will ask questions from the then government (UPA) on the kind of people who were given loans. What were the intentions behind those loans. What was the role of the government. These questions will be asked," the minister said.

The country's second largest bank Punjab National Bank has reported that it has been defrauded of Rs 11,400 crore by diamantaire Modi and his associates including Mehul Choksi.

The alleged fraud took place by use of fraudulent Letters of Undertaking (LoUs).

Speaking at another event, Union Minister Giriraj Singh said the bank scam is result of misdeeds of Congress.
