Militants on Monday shot dead a senior leader of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

Abdul Gani Dar, the Pulwama unit president of the PDP, was shot at by the militants in Pinglena village of Pulwama district, 31 kms from here, this afternoon, a police official said.

Police said the militants fired at Dar when he was travelling in a vehicle near Pingalana village.

Dar, an advocate by profession, was referred to SMHS Hospital here but succumbed to injuries.

"He was shifted to Srinagar for treatment but he succumbed to injuries," a police officer said. Dar headed the PDP in Pulwama district.

The PDP leader was shot at three times from a close range with an AK assault rifle, he said, adding two bullets hit him in the chest and one in the shoulder.

No militants outfit has claimed responsibility for the killing so far.

This is the third political killing in south Kashmir in a week.

A PDP worker was killed in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district when suspected militants barged into his house and opened fire on April 15.

On April 17, militants had shot dead a former public prosecutor affiliated with opposition National Conference in Shopian district.

Earlier today, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi to discuss the security situation in the state.

She said that the talks cannot be initiated in the state amid stone-pelting and bullets.

“Let us first control the situation because talks cannot happen amid stone-pelting and bullets,” Mehbooba told media persons.
