Students pay floral tribute to Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru on his 129th birth anniversary, celebrated as Children's Day (Bal Diwas), at the historic Anand Bhawan in Allahabad

President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister, on the occasion of his birth anniversary on Wednesday. 

'Remembering Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, our first Prime Minister, on his birth anniversary', the official handle of President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted, while PM Modi recalled Nehru's  'contribution to our freedom struggle and during his tenure as Prime Minister''. 

Born on November 14, 1889, Pandit Nehru was among the central figures in Indian politics before and after independence. A close-aide of Mahatma Gandhi during the freedom struggle, Nehru was known as Chacha Nehru among children. His birth anniversary is celebrated as Children's Day across India. 

Paying homage to 'India's first and the longest serving Prime Minister', Congress party said that Pt Jawaharlal Nehru dedicated his life to the nation. "He laid the foundations of strong democratic institutions which shaped our modern day democracy. Today we honour the man & the legacy," the party said.
