Onam, one of the most significant festivals of Kerala, is here to mark the harvest season depicting the end of monsoons. It witnesses one of the most popular celebrations in the country, falling during the month of Chingam according to Malayalam Calendar that corresponds to August or September of the Gregorian Calendar. Onam also marks the Malayalam New Year. The celebrations began on ​August 15 and will end on August 25.  Onam is celebrated in the honour of King Mahabali, whose reign was believed to be the most prosperous time for the state. The festival is celebrated to eternalise the generosity and sacrifice of King Mahabali, who never let anyone return empty-handed from his door. It is believed that his spirit comes to visit his subjects during Onam.
