New Delhi:Till a few years ago, the criteria to qualify as an assistant professor in universities and colleges meant the candidate had to clear National Eligibility Test (NET)/State Level Eligibility Test (SET). But not anymore.

Thanks to all the persuasion and efforts put in by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, University Grants Commission (UGC) has now relaxed the process of the faculty recruitment.

The minimum eligibility condition for assistant professors has now been amended. HRD Ministry announced that professors and scholars who have already completed their respective PHDs or have registered for one before 2009 will now be eligible for lectureship without having to appear or clear NET.

Also, now, maternity and child care leaves will be provided to women candidates.

This announcement will now make more room for teaching jobs in India and will add to the respite of thousands of students.

However the candidates need to fulfill certain conditions to be exempted from clearing NET.

For instance, the candidate’s Ph.D degree should be on regular mode, the research thesis prepared by the student should have been checked by minimum 2 external examiners, candidate should have given the viva and minimum 2 papers based on his Ph.D thesis should be published.
