Srinagar: Around 1,500 outstation students of the National Technology of Institute (NIT) in Srinagar today left for home instead of taking their exams, which began as per the HRD Ministry’s directions.
The students said they were asked by the authorities to appear for the examinations if they remain inside the campus.
"Our administration told us to appear for the exams as we were staying in the hostels. But we have not prepared for our examinations as we have been busy protesting," a student, who did not wish to be named, said.
"The exams will be re-scheduled for those students who are not in the campus," the student added.
"Around 1,000-1,500 students have left for their homes after vacating the hostels before 5 a.m. in the morning," a student, who had left the valley on Monday, added.
After the unrest at NIT following clashes between students and police, many non-Kashmiri students had expressed their desire to go back to their homes. The total number of students studying at the NIT here is around 2700.
The semester exams begun here yesterday with HRD Ministry promising that those who want to appear later, re-exams will be scheduled.
Tension started brewing inside the NIT campus, located at the banks of famous Dal lake, after India lost to West Indies in semi-final in the World T20 tournament prompting some local students to rejoice and burst crackers. This led to protest by outstation students resulting in clashes.
Since March 31 night, the situation inside the campus remained volatile and the authorities had posted personnel from Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Seema Suraksha Bal (SSB). The local police was manning the main gate of the institute.
