Exactly four years after the shameful Nirbhaya gangrape came to light – a case that shocked and enraged the entire nation – another terrifying case of rape has been reported from the national capital’s Moti Bagh area.
What is even more shocking is that the girl was allegedly raped in a moving car bearing Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) sticker on Thursday night.
According to media report, the car belonged to a CISF constable. The police have managed to arrest the accused, identified as Aman Kumar, who was a personal driver of the constable, and has also taken the vehicle in possession.
The victim, who is a resident of Noida, had gone to Delhi to look for a job. One her way back home, she was waiting for a cab in Moti Bagh area when the accused stopped near her and allegedly offered to take her home, says an India Today report.
Meanwhile, the police said that the Home Ministry sticker which the car has is fake.
The incident comes on the fourth anniversary of the gangrape and murder of Nirbhaya, a 23-year-old paramedical student. She was gangraped and brutally tortured in a bus while returning with a friend after watching a movie in posh South Delhi. She had died 13 days later, on December 29, at a hospital in Singapore.
One of the six accused in the Nirbhaya case was a juvenile, while another, Ram Singh, who was driving the bus, was found hanging in jail in March 2013. The other four – Akshay, Vinay Sharma, Pawan and Mukesh – were found guilty and sentenced to death by the Delhi High Court in September 2013.
The four, however, challenged the death sentence in Supreme Court, which is currently hearing the appeal.
Since the Nirbhaya case, the incidents of rape in Delhi have steadily increased, rising from 706 in 2012 to 1981 in 2016. Police attribute this to more women coming forward to lodge complaints after the 2012 incident.
