Nasik: In an incident that points to the chauvinism that still exists in many sections of Indian society, a man in Nasik district of Maharashtra ended his marriage barely within 48 hours after his wife failed a so-called 'virginity test'.
What he didn’t realise or probably did not want to consider was that the girl had been preparing for recruitment in the police force and was actively involved in sporting activities like running, long jump and cycling among other exercises.
Regardless, the man sought permission to end the relationship from the village caste Panchayat of his district, which not only allowed him to do so, but also termed the newly-wed girl as 'not virgin'.
In the shocking 'virginity test’ that was carried out a day after the wedding on May 22, the groom was allegedly given a white bed sheet by the caste panchayat for consummation of marriage. Afterwards, when the groom went back to the Panchayat with no blood stains on the bed sheet, he was allowed to end the relationship.
The case soon caught the eyes of social workers Ranjana Gavande and Krishna Chandgude, who then informed a news portal of the girl’s aspirations to join the police force and her exercise regimen.
They said they will hold a meeting with the leaders of the Panchayat tomorrow to arrive at a proper solution. If that fails, a police complaint will be filed, they said.
