Muzaffarnagar: In what is reminiscent of the September 2013 communal riots that led to the death of 68 people, tensions resurfaced in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh yesterday after clashes broke out between two communities over the alleged eve-teasing of a girl. Six people were seriously injured in the clashes, police said.
The two groups started pelting stones at each other after the alleged eve-teasing incident came to light, injuring six persons, they said.
Locals of the area alleged that instead of taking the accused under the custody, the police took the victim to their station.
"Our girl was molested and yet it was she who was taken to the police station, while no action was taken against the accused, who still remain at large," alleged an agitator.
Security was tightened in the area after the clash. The situation is under control, Superintendent of Police (City) Santosh Kumar said.
"People of both sides have been pacified after being made to understand the gravity of the matter. Taking precautionary measures, adequate police force has been deployed in the area,” he said.
"We will take strict action against the accused and none will be spared at any cost," he added.
One youth has been arrested for allegedly eve-teasing the girl, he said.
