Following reports of a bystander molesting a woman who was breathing her last in the stampede at Elphinstone Road railway station, the Mumbai Police on Tuesday said that they have investigated the allegations and found it to be untrue.

A senior police official said that the man accused of molesting the woman was actually trying to help her, according to a report in The Indian Express.

“The victim got stuck in between the railing of the bridge. The commuter tried to drag her out. He rested her body on his foot and was trying to pull her and grabbed her by her chest. His intention was to save her and not molest her,” the official was quoted by The Indian Express as saying.

ACP Sunil Deshmukh also confirmed the same.

Earlier, it was reported that the bystander was seen molesting the woman, who tragically died a few minutes later. The video of the alleged molestation has been doing rounds on social media.

At least 23 people died and over 30 were injured in the stampede that took place on a narrow foot-over-bridge (FoB) that connects the Elphinstone Road on the Western Railway to Parel on the Central line.
