Seven civilians and two paramilitary troopers were injured on Tuesday when suspected militants hurled a grenade at security forces in a south Kashmir village, police said.
The grenade exploded on the roadside in Bon Bazar area of Shopian district when a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) party was patrolling the area, a police officer said.
The nine injured included four women. They have been shifted to a hospital, the police officer said.
The attack came as security forces are battling an unknown number of heavily-armed militants holed up inside Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneurship Institute (JKEDI) building in Pampore, also in south Kashmir.
That encounter, which started on Monday morning, is on its second day. Officials said the encounter has stretched on because the building offers a bunker-like protection to the terrorists.
Rockets and heavy automatic gunfire were used on Tuesday morning to engage the militants.
The 70-room, seven-storey building is located on the banks of the river Jhelum and 12 km from the Srinagar city centre.
The main building of the institute was attacked in February this year when militants captured it and launched a major attack on security forces. Six persons – a civilian, three soldiers and two paramilitary troopers –we re killed then before three militants were shot dead.
