#MeToo movement has completed one year. Here are some interesting facts about this movement that is making headlines in India:
1. “Me Too” was coined by Tarana Burke, an African-American civil rights activist from New York in 2006.
2. It was later popularised by American actress- Alyssa Milano in 2017 on Twitter. She tweeted ,"If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’ as a reply to this tweet."
3. The #MeToo movement is a campaign against sexual harassment and sexual assault, especially at the workplace. It also became popular in different languages all across the world.
4. The hashtag, which has trended in at least 85 countries, reflects that the movement is certainly not a gimmick or just another social media trend. In many countries there has been a lot of discussion about whether or not cultural norms should be changed to eradicate sexual harassment at the workplace.
5. Google has created a dedicated website, MeTooRising, on search trends on #MeToo across the world.
6.According to Google, #MeToo has been searched in all the 195 countries in the world within the past one year. India too, gives heavy traffic.
7. According to Pew Research, the #MeToo hashtag has been used roughly 19 million times on Twitter in the past year, and usage often surges around news events.
8. Roughly seven out of ten(71%) #MeToo tweets were written in English. But the movement has sparked social media interest across the globe, and the analysis shows that 29% of the #MeToo tweets during these periods were written in another languages as well.
9. In India, #MeToo campaign gained steam around 7 October when actor Tanushree Dutta made serious allegations against Nana Patekar and recited her experiences during the shoot of the film, Horn OK Pleasss, 10 years ago.
10. It was followed by accusation of Minister MJ Akbar, by six women journalists for sexually harassing them when he worked as a newspaper editor. The list also includes great personalities like Alok Nath, Vinod Dua and many more.
#MeToo movement gained momentum on Twitter, and picked up on Facebook. However, it is also one of the most discussed topics on Instagram with more than 15 lakh posts.
