Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati, following reports of a widening rift between her party and Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party, on Tuesday confirmed the BSP would go solo in the upcoming by-polls in Uttar Pradesh.
"It's not a permanent break. If we feel in future that the SP chief [Akhilesh Yadav] succeeds in his political work, we'll again work together. But if he doesn't succeed, it'll be good for us to work separately. So we've decided to fight the by-polls," Mayawati, while addressing the media, said.
She, however, added her relationship with Akhilesh was beyond politics.
"Ever since the [SP-BSP] coalition, Akhilesh Yadav and his wife [Dimple Yadav] have given me a lot of respect. I also forgot all our differences in the interest of the nation and gave them respect. Our relation is beyond politics; it'll continue forever," Mayawati said.
She added, "However, we cannot ignore political compulsions. In the Lok Sabha election in Uttar Pradesh, the base vote of Samajwadi Party, the 'Yadav' community, didn't support the party. Even strong contenders of SP were defeated."
India TV had, on Monday, reported that Mayawati was planning to go solo in the Uttar Pradesh by-polls and that the SP and BSP were staring at a split.
This development, hence, comes as a validation to the report.
