Lucknow: Rioters at Jawahar Bagh had tried to kidnap City SP Mukul Dwivedi after injuring him during Thursday's clash but failing to do so, they instead lynched him before dispersing.
Dwivedi, one of the two police officers killed during the clash, was closing in on the mob when he was hit by a stone on his face. "As he was knocked off unconscious and hit the ground, his helmet came off. The mob then attacked him with sticks and rods," Times of India quoted a police officer.
"They tried to drag him away into the camp. It was then that a PAC team reached the site and lobbed a teargas shell," he added.
The family members of SP Mukul Dwivedi have demanded that a CBI probe be ordered into the incident.

Without naming anybody, Archana Dwivedi, wife of the City SP, said her husband was made a "scapegoat" and demanded CBI probe into the violence that consumed life of her husband and one other police officer.
"When there were para military forces, who are trained to deal with this kind of violence, stationed in Mathura then why senior district police officials sent newly-recruited policemen to a guerilla war," she asked.
Archana said, "It was like playing with their lives" and alleged that other police personnel escaped from the spot leaving her husband behind.
A probe into the violence, in which 29 people were killed, will begin today with the spot visit by the Commissioner of Aligarh.
"I will first take stock of the situation by visiting the area. If somebody wants to present something (evidence or information) on the Jawahar Bag episode, he would be heard," said the Commissioner Aligarh and Presiding officer the probe committee, Chandra Kant.
Asked if it would be a magisterial probe, he said "it would be a high-power administrative probe.
Police on Saturday confirmed that mastermind of violence Ram Vriksha Yadav had died in the incident. Director General of Uttar Pradesh Police Javeed Ahmad confirmed that his body has been identified by associates and the family has been intimated for final confirmation.
Meanwhile, Police officials in Mathura have decided to provide a financial help of Rs 76 lakh each to the families of the two police officers killed during the clashes.
Additional SP (Rural) Arun Kumar Singh said all gazetted officers will give their seven days salary, Sub-inspector rank officers their five days salary and personnel below the rank of SI will give their three days salary to the two families.
Similarly, district administration officers and employees have decided to donate their one day salary for the police officers' families, an official release said.
